Levels of Membership

Membership in the College is contingent upon continuing compliance with the Constitution and Bylaws. Members are also encouraged to seek membership in the AOA, State and local divisional Osteopathic societies.

Active Membership:

Available to any person, duly licensed s a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine who is primarily engaged in the practice or administration of emergency medicine for three or more years prior to application, or has successfully completed an emergency medicine residency approved by the AOA or ACGME.

Associate Membership:

Available to any person who does not meet the criteria for Active Membership that has demonstrated a sincere interest in emergency medicine and the College.

Resident Membership:

Available to any person, licensed as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or a Doctor of Medicine who is presently enrolled in an AOA approved emergency medicine residency program.

Student Membership:

Available at no cost to any person presently enrolled in an AOA approved College of Osteopathic Medicine that has demonstrated a sincere interest in emergency medicine.

Fellowship:

This honorary title is granted upon recommendation of an Active, Associate, Honorary and Life Members in the College by a current Fellow. The ACOEP Board of Directors is responsible for granting recognition of this title.

Criteria for the nomination includes:
  • Current certification in emergency medicine by AOA or AOBEM.
  • Continuous membership in ACOEP for 5 years prior to nomination. Resident membership is
    included in this 5-year period.
  • Attendance at 3 or more ACOEP membership meetings.
  • Documented evidence of high professional standing in the profession, such as residency program
    or COM involvement, and publication of articles in nationally circulated periodicals.

Retired:

A member of ACOEP who is officially retired from the practice of emergency medicine, but wishes to remain active within the College may apply to the Board of Directors to request Retired Membership status.

Retired membership dues are half the Active rate and Retired members receive half off admission fees to ACOEP-sponsored activities. Retired members may participate as a voting member of any College committee, but do not have the right to vote on other College business, hold office in the College, and have no right or interest in the property of the College.

Life:

Life Membership status is available to any ACOEP member who meets one ore more of the following criteria:
  • A documented disability, which precludes him or her from the practice of emergency medicine.
  • A current member who has 25 years of continuous membership in ACOEP.
  • A current Retired member with a minimum of 20 years of continuous membership prior to
    being designated as a Retired member and a minimum of 5 years of Retired Membership status.
  • A current member with a minimum of 10 years of continuous membership and is 65 years or older
    who is officially retired from the practice of emergency medicine.
